About the turntable
The SL-1210 MK7 is the black version of Technics’ MK7, the deck that brought the 1200 series back for DJs in 2019. The layout is exactly where decades of muscle memory expect it: start/stop bottom left, pitch fader on the right, the S-shaped tonearm on its gimbal suspension. If you learned on a pair of 1210s, you’ll be at home within seconds.
Under the platter is where it changes. Technics fitted a newly developed coreless direct drive motor that removes cogging, the tiny speed ripple older motors could produce, so rotation is smoother and the pitch holds steady under a heavy hand. Starting torque of 1.8 kg·cm gets the platter to 33 rpm in about 0.7 seconds, and the two-layer platter pairs die-cast aluminium with a damping rubber underside to kill resonance.
The MK7 also adds features the classic 1210s never had. Reverse play is built in, start and brake speeds can be adjusted to taste, and the pitch range switches between plus or minus 8% and 16%. A pop-up LED stylus light shows you the needle in a dark booth, and the phono and power cables are detachable, which makes a stuck or tired lead a two-minute swap rather than a repair job.
It is a pure analogue deck with no built-in phono preamp or USB, so connect it to a DJ mixer or amp with a phono input, which is exactly how clubs run them. Whether you’re building your first vinyl setup, completing a pair, or replacing a worn-out 1210, this is the deck the rest are measured against.
