About the mixer
The MODEL 1 is the mixer Richie Hawtin and Allen & Heath designer Andy Rigby-Jones built for long, layered sets. Six identical stereo channels, no crossfader, no digital effects, just a fully analogue signal path with a huge amount of headroom and a fully balanced main mix bus.
Instead of a standard 3-band EQ, each channel gets a Sculpt filter: a swept bell that cuts up to 20dB or boosts up to 8dB anywhere from 70Hz to 7kHz. Pair it with the Contour high-pass and low-pass filters and you can carve a track into the mix with far more precision than a kill EQ allows.
Every input has a Drive control that pushes the analogue preamp into gentle saturation, so drums and basslines can be thickened without touching an external processor.
The master section adds a three-band EQ with asymmetric cut and boost, a resonant master high-pass and low-pass filter, and a two-band booth EQ. Two stereo aux sends and returns let you run outboard effects on any channel.
The Dual Cue system gives two DJs independent headphone mixes, so back-to-back sets flow without swapping cables. Mixer Link connects a second PLAYdifferently mixer for a 10 channel setup.
Connections cover three high-performance phono preamps for turntables, line inputs, Tascam DB25 balanced I/O, XLR master outputs, a quarter-inch booth output and a front-mounted record out.
A modern classic for techno, house and hybrid setups where sound quality and hands-on control matter more than built-in effects.
