About the controller
The Pioneer XDJ RX was one of the first all-in-one DJ systems to truly bridge the gap between bedroom and club setups, offering a standalone experience that closely mirrors the layout of a full CDJ/DJM setup. It’s a 2-channel unit that runs entirely on rekordbox USB sticks—no laptop is required—making it a reliable choice for mobile DJs, bar residencies, or home practice for club-style sets.
The XDJ RX features a single 7-inch full-color screen that displays both decks’ waveforms side by side, along with track information, BPM, cue points, and library browsing. The screen layout and controls are very similar to what you’d find on professional Pioneer CDJs, so transitioning to club gear feels intuitive.
The jog wheels are responsive and decently sized, not quite CDJ-2000 size but significantly better than smaller controllers. Each deck has performance pads for hot cues, loop rolls, slicer, and beat jump, though fewer than what’s found on newer models. The mixer section is based on the DJM-900 layout, complete with Sound Color FX (like filter, noise, crush, and gate) and Beat FX (including echo, reverb, flanger, etc.), which can be assigned to each channel via a dedicated FX strip.
Connectivity is robust for its time, including XLR and RCA master outs, booth output, two mic inputs, and two USB ports (great for back-to-back DJing or recording your set directly). Build quality is solid, with a metal top plate and rubberized knobs—giving it a more professional, durable feel than entry-level controllers.
While the XDJ RX has now been succeeded by the RX2 and RX3, the original XDJ-RX still holds up as a powerful, reliable unit. It’s an excellent choice if you want the Pioneer club workflow without investing in separate CDJs and a mixer. Its biggest appeal is its all-in-one simplicity—a plug-in-and-play solution that’s perfect for those who want professional features in a more compact, cost-effective package.
