About the speaker

The Yamaha HS5 is probably the most recognisable compact studio monitor in the world. The white woofer is a direct nod to Yamaha’s NS-10, the speaker generations of engineers used to sanity-check their mixes, and the HS5 keeps that same honest character: flat, revealing and completely unhyped.

At 5 inches with 70W of bi-amped power, it is built for desktops and smaller rooms. It will not shake the walls, and that is the point: what it gives you is clarity through the mids and highs, so vocals, synth lines and effects sit exactly where you put them. Many producers pair it with a subwoofer later, but plenty mix happily on HS5s alone.

The rear panel has balanced XLR and TRS inputs, so it connects cleanly to any audio interface, mixer or DJ controller. Room Control and High Trim switches let you tame bass build-up near walls or soften the top end, useful in bedrooms and untreated spaces.

For a first proper monitor, or a compact reference speaker next to a DJ setup, the HS5 remains the default recommendation for good reason.
